ZA70 ENGINE CASE
This product is an 8 piece billet engine case for a two stroke vintage mopeds from the late 1970s. Quantity 5 produced in 2023, and quantity 25 run completed in 2024 (~$30k). The listing for this latest revision of engine can be found here.
This engine was fully laser scanned, and each component digitally duplicated. Every portion was modeled, and reworked from a cast feature, into an economical billet feature.
It was critical to get inside the brain of the original designers, extract their design intent, and apply it to billet 3D designs working within the strengths and limitations of billet manufacturing.
Beyond the mechanical design and part drafting, assembly instructions were also written for end users, and a comprehensive consumer assembly documentation package was created. That documentation package is hosted here as a Schimmel Engineering resource.
Utilizing a Creaform HandyScan Black Elite laser scanner, we extracted all critical features from the original design, and digitized all critical parts for digital fit checks. After preliminary design, 4 printed prototypes were assembled and used to gauge functionality of the new case breaks, as well as use as a sanity check.
All mechanical design and drafting took place in Solidworks. Creaform’s VXModel was heavily used for feature extraction. In addition to reverse engineering, the accuracy of the laser scanner also allows inspection of machine parts from vendors.
GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerance) was critical to accommodate special bearings, NLA components, stack up tolerances and ease of assembly and maintenance by end users.
The work flows developed in this project translate well to transmission swaps and modification, engine swaps and modification, engine accessory swaps, custom belt drives, electric drivetrain swaps, and almost anything else mechanical you could think of.
